SpaceX's Next Frontier: Solving the Space Congestion Crisis with VLEO (2026)

SpaceX's IPO marks a pivotal moment in the space industry, transforming the once-distant dream of interplanetary civilization into a mainstream capital markets story. The company's ability to execute a new vision, centered around reusability and innovation, has forced the industry to rethink its traditional boundaries. However, as SpaceX ventures into orbital data centers, it faces a critical challenge: the need for more space in low Earth orbit (LEO).

The current LEO environment is already crowded, with over 10,000 satellites and tens of thousands of debris pieces being tracked. SpaceX's ambitious plan to launch up to 1 million new satellites could exacerbate this issue, leading to a significant increase in collision-avoidance maneuvers. This raises a deeper question: if orbital data centers are to become viable, must we consider operating satellites in very low Earth orbit (VLEO), which is roughly 200 to 300 kilometers above the Earth?

In my opinion, the answer is yes. VLEO offers a 'self-cleaning' mechanism, clearing debris within weeks due to atmospheric drag. This makes it a safer and more sustainable option for long-term space infrastructure. NewOrbit's electric propulsion system enables satellites in VLEO to operate for over five years, turning what was once an impractical orbit into a viable solution for high-value applications.

What makes this particularly fascinating is the potential for VLEO to unlock sharper imagery from smaller, cheaper spacecraft and direct-to-device connectivity, making phone signals reliable even in remote regions. However, this also raises concerns about the Kessler effect, where collisions create exponential debris, potentially rendering parts of the orbit unusable. This highlights the need for regulators, agencies, investors, and companies to prioritize orbital sustainability as a design requirement.

From my perspective, the SpaceX IPO serves as both a milestone and a warning. It proves that space infrastructure has entered the mainstream, but it also underscores the urgency of addressing LEO congestion. The challenge now is not just to show what can be unlocked by putting more satellites into space, but to do so in a way that is sustainable and useful for hundreds of years to come. Increasingly, that future will be lower than we think.
