This project, born out of a desire to explore personal growth and inner dialogue, showcases Kathuria's unique approach to art and design, blending commercial success with a deep-seated need for self-expression.
A Personal Journey
Kathuria's background is a fascinating blend of cultural influences. His upbringing in a small, tight-knit music scene in Delhi, centered around metal, electronic, and experimental music, laid the foundation for his creative pursuits. The move to London for his master's at the London College of Communication in 2021 was a transformative experience, marking a shift from a collectivist upbringing to a highly individualistic culture. This transition became the catalyst for Mindspill, a series of typographic posters that reflect his thoughts, feelings, and personal growth during this period.
The Mindspill Archive
Mindspill is a collection of posters, each one a reflection of Kathuria's inner journey. He explains, "These posters came together from things I kept telling myself during difficult periods, or thoughts that surfaced when I was a far more anxious person. Somewhere in the process, my inner dialogue slowly began to change. So what began as anxious, negative thinking gradually turned into a much kinder voice – a sort of inner dialogue rooted in optimism and reason. And that is the crux of Mindspill. Each poster is a little milestone in this long journey of self-discovery and learning."
The Creative Process
Kathuria's creative process is a fascinating blend of traditional and experimental techniques. He starts with a phrase in a simple font created in Illustrator, then pushes it to its limits using different brushes, shapes, and letters drawn directly on a trackpad. He even experimented with charcoal, drawing with his left hand. The vector skeleton is then moved to Photoshop, where blurs, filters, and effects are applied to create the desired visual tone. Some posters use experimental typesetting in InDesign, with unusual paths and grid-based compositions, where color and texture carry the emotional weight of the words. The results are deliberately hard to read, as Kathuria finds joy in distorting typefaces, rebelling against the cleanliness of graphic design.
Exploring Themes
The posters in Mindspill explore a range of themes, each one a reflection of Kathuria's personal experiences and emotions. For example, Number 07: Decentre All That Doesn't Serve, was inspired by a period of hollow friendships and the cultural gap between his collectivist background and London's individualism. It is rendered in 3D, shaped like a rock, symbolizing the challenges he faced. Number 13: You Put It On A Pedestal, created after a complicated friendship ended, features simple typography that landed well, suggesting that sometimes less is more. Number 18: Don't Burn The House That Made You, is about the house in Delhi where he grew up, blending feelings of embarrassment with love and connection.
A Shared Space
Kathuria's plan for Mindspill is to open it up to the world, inviting other designers to contribute posters and turning the archive into a shared space for typographic experimentation and emotional honesty. He is currently exploring kinetic type with After Effects and the font Cavalry, bringing motion back into his personal work. Despite his busy schedule, he emphasizes the importance of finding time for personal challenges, as they provide a sense of fulfillment and growth.
